Crankshaft Sealing
Hello Everyone,
I'm finishing a full restore of my 17m!! However, i've a problem in the sealing of the crankshaft. In attach, i put some photos show it.
The sealing is made with some "special rope", but the installation is tricky. I've tried it two times, but not with 100% success.
The sealing never seals 100%, and i've some oil leaking from it.
Anyone have installed it already? It's nomarl some leaking?? (2 or 3 drops from one day to the next in garage)
Thanks,
Nuno

Hi Nuno,
although i never had my hands on this (no need to overhaul my engine yet), i have heard several times about the problems you describe. From what i remember, there are several critical points:
- the sealing rope has to be of top qualitiy (some people used a part from Mercedes-Benz)
- there is a special tool which is shaped like the crankshaft diameter to press the sealing strip halves really tight inside the slit
- cutting the corresponding edges has to be done with a little oversize, but not to much
- an experienced ford-mechanic who has done this 100x is the best help for this tricky work
do you use the proper oil ? the modern multi-grade oils are to thin fluid for the old sealing systems, more or less leaking is normal then.
and i heard of people who converted the rope sealing to a modern rotary shaft sealing, but this requires a complete disassembly of the motor and the crankshaft plus some mechanical treatment of the sealing seat - overkill in my opinion, but from technical aspects the best solution.
hope you get it sorted,
regards

Hi Nuno,
I have had the same problems (and bambi also). I had ordered a new sealing rope from a German firm (for Fords) , but the material was bad and to small, and after the Oil was running out.
Now I have taken the rope of Mercedes-Typ W 115 (about 9,~ €). The cut must be a push(thrust)on push(thrust) It's perfect now!
Not even one drop is comming out.
And than, you have to take a mineraloil HD 20/50 (like Klaus KW have said)

Hello, Thanks for your answers Klaus and Wolle,
I had searched at youtube and find a good video doing it:
The oil i use, is a 20w40, i've tried a 15w40 but the oil pump doesn't worked well when the car stays 2 or 3 days without working.
However, i don't know if this oil is a multi grade or not. I will check it.
The seal rope i've bought, is this one --> www.motomobil.com/gasket-crankshaft-rear,3237,5087640-1.html
Is this good one?
I put some photos in gallery
Thanks once more,
Nuno

I have ordered thisone two times.....
......exactly, thisone was shit!
First you measure, then you will go to Mercedes Benz, measure it again, and than you built it inside!
Mercedes Benz Typ W115
And in warm countries like Portugal, you can also take HD 30.
No synthetic oil!

Hi again,
all oils like 20w-50 or 15w40 are multigrade oils. no problems if it doesnt leak anywhere to much.
single-grade oils which are recommended for the P3 are SAE 20 or SAE 20W.
that is what the originial sticker in the engine compartment tells.
regards
klaus
