hi spank,
i do not know if your concerns loosing the rubber part are right, but it seems possible... which would lead to more work removing the oil pan. oil pan removing is a pain in the ass, because you have to lift the whole engine by some inches to get the pan off (due to the oil suction nozzle). so better try this: you said you are able to rotate and lift the oil pipe at least a bit. so i would turn it to the side and try to stick some stiff but flexible steel cable (bowden cable from bicycle brake..) inside the tube and push it downwards as far as possible... maybe you can get the tube clear/clean inside again. in the meantime, do not let the engine run without oil on the upper valve rocker arm shaft... although at that place there is not too much oil even on a healthy engine, at least every moving part slightly should be slightly wet from oil.
regards and good luck!

PS: if you find the time, please tell us how, when, and why you got a 17m P3 over there in the states, because these seem to be quite rare cars in the us!

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have not yet returned to the motor to see if what I have done has enabled oil to rise to the rocker gear.

But I will address how I got the Taunus: It was listed for sale on craigslist in the town I live. The seller was a car salesperson and also a collector. Unfortunately, there was a horrible fire in San Diego a few years ago and he lost 37 classic cars to the fire. The Taunus survived the fire but did suffer heavily from the acidic ash so there is severe corrosion throughout the body. I was able to purchase the car very cheaply because it really isn't a good candidate for a proper restoration, but is a good car for me to drive and enjoy. The seller was able to give me some paperwork that shows the Taunus was imported into the US privately back in the 1960s, likely by a military person, and then migrated to Calfornia. It wears the desired "Blackplates" license plates indicating it was first documented and used in California in the late 1960s.

Turning my attention to the brakes: What options do I have for putting disc brakes on the front? The brakes are completely non-function and instead of finding new brakes cylinders and making the old front drum brakes work, I would rather upgrade to something with greater stopping power. What options are available?

Hi spank,
thanks for sharing this! it was likely that the car was braought to the US by a soldier after his stay in germany...
brake conversion: can be done, but expensive!
in the second year of production, they offered disc brake as an option, and in the last year (64) it was stock!
but you need many parts:
-complete front wheel shock absorber/spring/wheelaxle assembly
-brake caliper and disc :-)
-new main brake cylinder
-new rear brake cylinders

hard to get... it is not like you can buy almost everything for a 64 mustang, taunus parts are rare. the main spareparts warehous of ford germany burnt down completely in the early 70s, and since then NOS parts are very expensive or simply not available.

a starting point /source to buy parts is
www.motomobil.com/17m-p3,2334.html
(you see their shop is in english language and they do international business).

keep us informed,
have fun
klaus
